Counselling Philosophy & Approaches

You and I have our own life stories. Despite our differences, we are nonetheless individuals needing to be heard, understood, supported and loved. However, regardless of who we are, these common needs may sometimes be unmet due to a myriad of reasons. We are no stranger to this and it becomes particularly painful when we are faced with a perplexing conundrum, only to know that we are unable to turn to our friends or loved ones for help. Worse, we start turning against ourselves.

Counsellor’s Commitment

The counsellor is committed to creating a safe space for you to talk about your problems. He is willing to journey with you, provide you with the needed listening ear and explore solutions and alternatives to your problems. He respects individuality and diversity and ultimately focuses on your internal strength and resources to resolve your issues as healing takes place.

Counselling Approaches

Counselling approaches and therapeutic interventions will vary with individual needs and assessment – considerations will be given to issues you are facing, suitability of the approach, readiness and prior consent. The core therapeutic approaches include second and third wave cognitive behavioural therapy, choice theory and reality therapy, Gottman Method couple therapy, solution-focused brief therapy and narrative therapy.

Questions clients ask

Frequent Questions

Here are responses to some commonly asked questions. Please feel free to enquire if your questions are not listed here.

What goes on in a counselling session?

Many people find speaking with a counsellor daunting. Speak to anyone who has attended counselling and you would realise that counselling is nothing more than a therapeutic chat. In fact, many experience a significant reduction of negative emotions, just merely by sharing their experiences with the counsellor.

On contrary to popular belief, a counsellor does not read your mind; he is not a psychic. A counsellor listens to your stories empathetically and compassionately and guides you to understand more deeply about your experiences. Counsellors journey with you through your issues and concerns and provide you with the needed safe space to ventilate and emote. In the process, you renew your internal strength and resources to explore solutions, alternatives and hope.

How are psychologists and counsellors different?

Although both psychologists and counsellors provide counselling, there are distinct differences.

Psychologists are able to conduct diagnostic assessments and give clients a diagnosis. They are also more likely to work with individuals suffering from more serious mental illnesses. Counsellors, on the other hand, work with individuals with more general mental and emotional health concerns arising from daily life stressors, e.g. relationships, parenting, work, caregiver stress, grief and loss etc.

Is it rude to feedback about the session?

A counsellor has your best interest. He wants to know if he has helped you in a session and the only way to know this is through your feedback. Your feedback about the session will inform the counsellor about how he has attended to you and what he can do to help you further.

How do I know when it is time to get help?

There is generally no hard and fast rule about when to seek help from a counsellor. Individuals are advised to take a more preventative and proactive approach in seeking help. This will prevent problems from becoming worse, jeopardising psychological and emotional well-being. There are no problems too small to seek support from a counsellor. Seek help early.

Do counsellors see all types of cases?

Although counsellors are able to attend to general mental health issues and concerns, some counsellors may be more specialised in certain areas than others. It is advisable to visit their website or enquire directly before making an appointment.

Does seeing a counsellor make me a weak person?

On the contrary, seeing a counsellor makes you a brave person. Seeking counselling is a healthy way to cope with issues you may have. The counsellor understands that it is not easy to talk about your issues to a stranger and thus, is committed to making the counselling experience as pleasant as possible for you.

Counsellors are nonetheless ordinary human beings who have had also experienced their own issues.
